The Widow’s Guide

Book Six · The People Around You · Chapter 3

Why have our couple friends drifted away?

“We had dinner with the same three couples for thirty years. Nobody has invited me since the funeral.”

The short answer

It may not mean they stopped caring. Couple friendships can run on couples: dinners for four, his friends and their spouses, your friends and theirs, an even number at the table.

Without him, people may not know where you fit. Some of them may be waiting for a sign from you, and you may be waiting for one from them.

What to do

  1. List the couples you still want in your life. The column for people to reach out to, on The people around you, at the back of this book, is one place to write them.
  2. Mark which seem unsure of you and which seem uncomfortable.
  3. Note who still calls or meets you for lunch, even if the couples' invitations have stopped.
  4. Write down which friendships began with him and which began with you.
  5. Read How do I keep the friends worth keeping? before you settle into waiting to be asked.
  6. Decide, when you are ready, how much more to give the few who seem to have meant it.

What can wait

Who can help

Other widows can be the easiest people to talk to about this, because some have watched their own couples' circle change. Where do I find other widows? covers where to find them.

A grief counselor or a grief group can help if losing your old circle is weighing on you more than you can carry alone. Where to get help tonight, at the back of this book, lists numbers for the harder nights.

The rules, phone numbers and web addresses in this book were checked against the agencies’ own pages in October 2026. They change, so check anything you rely on with the office itself.
