The Widow’s Guide

Book Five · The First Year · Chapter 9

Shouldn't I be better by now?

“My daughter says I should be getting out more. At church they say it's been nearly a year. Shouldn't I be better by now?”

The short answer

There is no deadline. The timelines other people hand you can say more about their own comfort than about your grief.

Feeling steadier can come early or much later, and either is ordinary. You are allowed to take the time this takes.

This chapter describes what widows report and what health agencies say. It is not medical or mental-health advice. If you are worried about your health, talk to your doctor. If you have thoughts of not wanting to be here, call or text 988, or chat at chat.988lifeline.org. It is for anyone who is struggling. Veterans and their families can dial 988, then press 1, or text 838255.

What to do

  1. Notice whose timeline you are measuring yourself against.
  2. Choose one short reply, and use it whenever someone hurries you.
  3. Give a worried child or friend one concrete way to help, if they keep offering advice.
  4. Compare yourself only with yourself a few months ago, if you compare at all.
  5. Talk to your doctor or a counselor if grief is making daily life hard.

What can wait

Who can help

A counselor, a grief group or your doctor can help with the grief and with other people's expectations of it. You can ask your doctor directly whether something more is going on.

If you have thoughts of not wanting to be here, tell someone today, or call or text 988, or chat at chat.988lifeline.org. It is for anyone who is struggling, and you do not have to be suicidal to reach out. For most people who have these thoughts, support and treatment work.

If the thoughts feel like a plan, call or text 988 now. You can also text HOME to 741741 for the Crisis Text Line.

The Veterans Crisis Line, 988 then press 1, or text 838255, is for veterans, service members and the family and friends who support them. Where to get help tonight, at the back of this book, has every number.

The rules, phone numbers and web addresses in this book were checked against the agencies’ own pages in October 2026. They change, so check anything you rely on with the office itself.
