The short answer
The second year can feel like this. The sharp grief can soften, many of the tasks may be done, and other people may think you are fine.
What is left can be quieter and harder to name. It is a life that no longer has its old shape, and does not yet have a new one.
Not every widow feels this, and the second year can also feel steadier than the first. If you do feel lost, it does not mean you have gone backward.
What to do
- Tell one person how the second year actually feels, in a sentence or two.
- Notice one hour a week that feels like yours, and write down what you did in it.
- Write down anything you are curious about, however small.
- Open anything dated, or from Social Security, a pension plan, a health plan, Medicare or an insurer, the day it arrives.
- Ask whoever is handling the estate or your taxes whether anything is still open.
- Read What do I actually want? when you feel ready to try something.

Who can help
A grief group that includes widows further along can help in the second year, and so can a counselor. Book 5, The First Year, covers both in Would a grief group or counselor help?
